Norris Geyser Basin
Yellowstone National Park
Wyoming

Does the word "apocalypse" come to mind when you view this scene? There is a distinctive feel (and smell) of aftermath when standing amidst this fuming cauldron. But it is unmistakeably beautiful at the same time. Such is Yellowstone in general. Norris Geyser Basin is perhaps the most geothermally active area within the park, and hosts some of the more explosive geysers. This boardwalk winds around the basin for about a mile or so. I shot this image in color, but just could not find the right color balance to convey the mood. I finally settled on "sepia toning" to emphasize the desolate climate of the scene.
