In typical fashion, we were driving to a particular location, when along the way something flashed and caught my eye. Basically it was contrast that jarred my focus away from my destination--contrast in the form of red bark against the stark silvery grey granite along Tioga Pass Road. In fact, some irony lies in the fact that this stunning variety of high-altitude flora is directly across the road from one of the more popular stops on en route to Tioga Pass. This is my favorite kind of photography--when my creative "divining rod" plunges earthward at the inevitable flash of inspiration found on the road to somewhere else. I'm relatively confident that Spirit Tree is a Western (Sierra) Juniper (Juniperus occidentalis), which can live 1000 years or more. |
