My first (and so far only) trip to the eastern Sierra Nevada was characterized by a real sense of discovery. Despite decades of exposure to photographs highlighting the topography, geology, flora, and fauna of the region, I was not prepared for the impression that many of these natural phenomena would have on me. Nowhere was this impression more surprising and fulfuilling than in the Schumann Grove atop the White Mountains near Bishop. We set out to record these animated life-forms late in the afternoon but having never visited, I was challenged to locate a compelling composition in the "right" light. Realizing that I was more on a scouting trip than anything, I decided to experiment with camera angle, fill-flash, and silhouette. I decided on a completely featureless silhouette as I felt that the absence of detail and texture enhanced the animated nature of this ancient tree. When I observe the image, I'm reminded of the Crucifixion on one extreme, and a gonzo alpine skier, or diver on the other. More:Everything you ever wanted to know about Pinus longaeva |
