Believe it or not, this picture was shot indoors in a small auditorium. The captive owl was part of the Maryland DNR's "Scales & Tales" program, and was placed in a tree brought in to the building. In the original image, there was a distracting bare spot in the upper left frame, so I digitally cloned some branches to better frame the bird, and did similar work to hide its tethers. The Short-eared Owl (Asio flammeus) is a predatory crow-sized bird of the open country, that can often be identified by its hovering tendency. |
