Red-Shouldered Hawk
(Buteo lineatus)

This Red-Shouldered Hawk was unquestionably the tamest raptor I have ever beheld in the wild.  I shot this with a 300mm lens from a distance of about 10 feet, which is incredibly close for a bird of prey.  Not only was I shooting, but so were about a dozen just like me, which was a spectacle itself.   This spectacle can be witnessed in most national parks and refuges these days, where wildlife is abundant and relatively acclamated to our presence.  It is not uncommon in such a setting to see a dozen or two well-outfitted photographers aiming their "big guns" at otherwise timid wildlife.  This picture was made in the Ding Darling National Wildlife Refuge on Sanibel Island.
