Don't ask me, I guess it's a tongue!  When I first saw this I was sure it was an anatomical device for probing morsels, and maybe it is, but I can't find any information related to it.  In any case, this was a stellar evening for tern and other shorebird photography.  The birds allowed close approach and the light was unbeatable.
