Barred Owl
(Strix varia)
Maryland (captive)

The Barred Owl (Strix Varia ) is the only owl I have ever identified definitively in the wild*. Chris and I actually succeeded in summoning not one, but three of these creatures to us at dusk one evening in a nearby field. Chris had spotted one in the vicinity prior to our sightings, so we arrived at our spot and began mimicking the familiar hooting call, "who cooks for you? who cooks for you all ?" Within minutes three birds arrived and perched on a nearby snag, eventually flying right over our heads back into the woods. This particular critter pictured here is an injured bird that will never return to the wild. She has only one eye, which would be obvious to the viewer had I not cloned her one good eye in Photoshop! Now if only modern veterinary science was this sophisticated!
