When I visit a place to photograph it, I carry with me a latent image in my brain that captures the essence of the particular setting. The actual image isn't formulated in my brain until I stumble upon it. In South Beach, this was the one that transformed the latent image. The scene required a bit of alteration in Photoshop: removal of some distracting shadows, and the desaturation (removal of color) from the unimportant elements. Finally, I muted the overall colors to lend a more nostalgic mood to the picture.
